Bone Graft

Following tooth loss, the supporting jawbone begins to deteriorate, a process known as bone atrophy.

A bone graft can restore volume to the area, improving the patient's candidacy for dental implant surgery.

At Pioneer Hills Dental in Aurora, CO, Dr. Terrance Wolbaum performs the bone graft procedure to preserve long-term dental health.

Benefits of Bone Grafts

Preserve Oral Health

When tooth loss occurs, the jawbone begins to shrink. Over time, this can affect your appearance and the fit of your dental restorations. A bone graft restores volume to the jawbone.

Prevent Facial Atrophy

Once the jawbone starts to deteriorate, the facial features can begin to sag. Many individuals with untreated tooth loss have a hollowed or gaunt appearance. Bone grafting can help address this issue.

Qualify for Dental Implants

To be successful, dental implants must be placed into healthy, dense bone tissue. For this reason, many patients with bone loss do not qualify for implants. Bone grafting can restore the jaw and improve candidacy.

What Sets Us Apart?

Patient Education

Many patients feel unsure about undergoing a bone graft because they don't know what is involved and how it can improve their oral health. Dr. Wolbaum addresses these concerns through patient education; he helps patients understand the value of fortifying the bone for an implant, which will in turn preserve the integrity of the jawbone and avoid more costly procedures in the future.

Advanced Technology

We use digital x-rays, which enable us to capture images of the whole tooth and supporting bone and gum tissues so we can more accurately diagnose issues and plan treatment. We also use Maxxeus allografts to repair bone tissue in the jaw. Maxxeus Dental is highly reputable and uses stringent standards; their products have a record of long-term success and great results.

What Is the Cost of Treatment?

We understand that many patients are concerned about the cost of a bone graft. The price of single tooth removal and a bone graft ranges from $800 to $1,200. We accept CareCredit® financing to break up the total cost of treatment into affordable monthly payments.

Dental Bone Graft Techniques

The dental bone graft procedure can be performed to restore density to any part of your jawboneDr. Wolbaum can perform a general bone grafting procedure, and he offers other bone graft techniques at our Aurora practice:

Ridge Augmentation

Also called a socket graft, this procedure is often performed in conjunction with tooth extraction to prevent the resorption of the alveolar bone and maximize bone tissue formation in the socket. If bone degradation has already occurred as a result of tooth loss, ridge augmentation can still be performed to rebuild the alveolar bone. Ridge augmentation procedures use bone grafting material to add height, width, and density to the alveolar ridge. It may be used in preparation for dental implants or other restorative solutions, such as traditional dentures.

Sinus Lift

When the upper molars are missing, the maxillary sinus can drop down and inhabit the region once occupied by the tooth's roots. A sinus lift raises the membrane back into its original position and fills the void underneath with new bone using the most appropriate graft material for your needs.

Where does the bone grafting material come from?

Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

Grafting is most often recommended prior to dental implant placement. Here is a general treatment timeline of what patients at our Aurora office can expect.

The Procedure

During bone grafting surgery, your dentist makes a small incision in the gums to access the underlying jawbone ridge. Next, the graft is placed in the area of deficiency. After covering the site with a membrane, your dentist repositions the gums and closes the incisions with sutures.

Healing and Recovery

Once a bone graft is placed, it must heal completely before implant surgery can be performed. To be successful long-term, an implant must be surrounded by strong, healthy bone. The healing process typically takes about three to six months. It may take shorter or longer depending on your case.

Implant Placement

When your graft has fully healed, your dental implant can be placed into the jawbone during a second surgery procedure. Using the latest advances in dental technology, your dentist determines the best location for your implant. Once the procedure is complete, any necessary sutures are placed.

Restoration Placement

In many cases, patients must allow the dental implant to heal for a few months before the restoration can be attached. During the healing phase, the implant fuses with the surrounding bone tissue in a process known as osseointegration. Once that fusion is complete, your crown, bridge, or denture is placed to complete your smile.
