Conquer Your Next First Impression
Dental veneers may be the ideal treatment for your smile assuming that your teeth are damaged or severely stained. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of adults believe their smile is a valuable social asset—with most agreeing that an attractive smile makes you more attractive to others.
If you aren’t happy with your smile, porcelain veneers are an excellent way to solve multiple issues at once. Pioneer Hills Dental has helped many Colorado men and woman perfect their smiles with this natural and straightforward cosmetic solution.
What are Dental Veneers & Why Might You Need Them?
A dental veneer is a porcelain shell that’s cemented to the teeth, enhancing the surface of your natural smile. It’s not a crown, so we don’t need to remove the outer layer of the entire tooth. If this treatment interests you, dr. Wolbaum can take impressions of your smile and start crafting the final shape and appearance of the veneers.
Covering teeth with a thin layer of porcelain can dramatically improve the look of the tooth by correcting problems like:
- Misshapen teeth
- Severe decay that caused the tooth to require a substantial filling
- Chips and breaks that have changed the shape and size of the tooth
- Unusual wear due to grinding
- Irregular spacing that has left gaps between teeth
- Discoloration due to the consumption of staining drinks, side effects from certain antibiotics, or root canals
How are Veneers Installed?
Dr. Wolbaum will start the procedure by making an imprint of the tooth and determining the final shape that will improve its look. Then, we use a local dental laboratory to create the porcelain shell which takes about two weeks.
Once the lab sends us the veneer, Dr. Wolbaum will remove a very thin layer of enamel from the surface of the tooth. This helps the porcelain shell lay flat against the tooth without protruding from the surface. The roughened surface also gives the bonding material more to grasp. Finally, he’ll use a special light to harden the adhesive, meaning you can use your new teeth as soon as you leave our office.
The Benefits of Dental Veneers
Since we customize veneers for each patient, it’s nearly impossible to identify them against the rest of your smile. Unlike natural teeth, porcelain veneers resist coffee and tea stains, as well as stains from cigarette smoke—this happens because they’re made of high-tech materials. Veneers also allow your natural teeth to remain almost entirely intact, unlike dental crowns.
While all of the above benefits are excellent for our Aurora, CO patients, veneers also:
- The bonding material last for several years
- Extremely easy to care for—treat them like your natural teeth
- Alters color, shape, and contours of teeth
- Restores chips, cracks, gaps
The Longevity of Veneers
Properly made and bonded veneers will last longer than any other dental restoration, besides gold. It’s not unrealistic to assume they’ll last ~20 years. Occasionally the veneers might fail—this can happen due to technique or trauma to the porcelain from a fall, grinding teeth, or using teeth as a tool. Dr. Wolbaum also recommends avoiding any abrasive kinds of toothpaste and using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Approximately one week after the placement of your veneers, you’ll return to our office for treatment evaluation. This visit is crucial because it allows us to evaluate the placement of the laminates, the gum tissue response, and to answer any questions you might have regarding your new smile. Regular maintenance and dental checkups are encouraged so that we can periodically review your veneers and oral health.
At your biannual check-ups, our Pioneer Hills Dental team can update you on the condition of your veneers and if we need to replace any.
Are There Alternatives to Dental Veneers?
Yes, alternatives to veneers include bonding and crowns. Veneers offer a nice intermediate option. Veneers may be best suited for individuals who want to see a dramatic change to the shape of their teeth—but not enough to require a crown.
