Types of Dental Crowns

Posterior Crowns

For caps that cover teeth in the posterior (back) of your mouth, we use very strong materials like zirconia. Other metal materials like stainless steel and gold can be made available, but patients usually prefer zirconia because it resembles the appearance of natural teeth.

Anterior Crowns

To cover your anterior (front) teeth that are visible when you smile, our dentist prefers to use materials that are as natural-looking as possible. We are proud to craft permanent crowns out of ceramic, porcelain, and IPS e.max®, a high-end material that creates the most lifelike results in dentistry.

Before and After Restoration

Same-Day Crowns Step-by-Step

Tooth Preparation

Our Aurora dentist must first prepare your damaged tooth. Dr. Wolbaum will remove any decayed or infected material (this may require root canal therapy). Then, he will reshape the remaining enamel so it can easily be covered with a new crown.

Digital Impressions

Using our advanced intraoral cameras, we will take a digital impression of your bite. Our CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) system allows our dentist to upload these 3D images.

Once the design is ready,  a replica of the digital image out of a block of high-grade ceramic, porcelain, IPS e.max, or zirconia.

Securing the Crown

It takes only a few minutes to place the dental crown once it is created. Our dentist will attach the restoration to your treated tooth with a powerful dental cement. He will make sure it fits properly and make any necessary adjustments. There is no need for a temporary crown and no recovery period or downtime. With proper care, your permanent crown should last for years to come.

Which should I choose? A same-day or traditional crown?

Traditional Crowns May Still Be Best...

Dental crown

When you choose a traditional crown, we will send your digital impressions to our partner dental lab. These labs have more materials at their disposal, so if you prefer a metal or gold crown, traditional crown treatment is right for you. Ask our dentist about the best option for your needs during your consultation at our Aurora practice.

If you are getting a crown to repair tooth decay or structural damage, the treatment is considered restorative. Your insurance will likely cover a good portion if not the entire cost of treatment for restorative purposes. On the other hand, if you are getting a dental crown for cosmetic reasons, you may not be covered. Fortunately, Pioneer Hills Dental is happy to offer flexible financing to help make treatment more affordable. CareCredit® is a great third-party financing option, allowing you to make low or no-interest monthly payments on your dental crown.

Invest in Your Oral Health

It is important to think of a dental crown as an investment that will pay off in the long run. Treatment will prevent you from developing more serious oral health conditions and even tooth loss. No matter what your individual crown costs come to, be sure it is a mere fraction of the price of complex restorative procedures, like dental implants. Save yourself the money, time, and trouble by taking care of your tooth now. If you have any questions about treatment costs or financing, do not hesitate to contact our Aurora practice. Frequently Asked Questions

The friendly staff at Pioneer Hills Dental in Aurora, CO, is happy to answer any questions you may have about dental crowns. Some frequently asked questions include...

How long will a crown stay in place?

A dental crown can last over fifteen years with proper care. Taking care of your oral health, including daily brushing and flossing as well as regular dental visits, is the best way to ensure your restoration lasts as long as it can.

What if my dental crown becomes loose?

Because crowns fit tightly and are reinforced by strong dental cement, they rarely come loose. But in the event your restoration becomes dislodged, you should call and make an appointment for repairs immediately. Dr. Wolbaum can see most patients on the same day for emergency treatment to prevent damage to the crown or tooth.

Can I whiten a dental crown?

Dental crowns are not susceptible to whitening treatments, but they also will not be harmed by it. When you work with our Aurora dentist, we will match the color of your restoration to the shade of your natural teeth. If you are unhappy with the current color of your teeth, we recommend having a whitening treatment before crown installation.

Can I replace my metal crown?

If you want your smile to look more natural, Dr. Wolbaum can remove your previous crown and install a ceramic or porcelain crown. Replacing restorations too often is not recommended because the tooth area can become weakened. However, switching a crown once for a natural update is okay.
