Dental Implants

Missing teeth can not only be embarrassing, but may undermine the health of your entire smile.  If you're missing one or all of your teeth, Dr. Terrance Wolbaum can restore your ability to bite, chew, and smile with dental implants. Learn how Pioneer Hills Dental in Aurora, CO, can treat tooth loss using implants.

Dental Implants Work Understanding How

Many patients have misconceptions about implants and how they're used. Here are the basics about implant dentistry and what makes it so effective.

Artificial Tooth Roots

Dental implants are artificial roots that are surgically embedded into the jawbone. During a months-long recovery, the implants fuse with the jawbone, a process known as osseointegration.

Support for False Teeth

Once the implants are topped with an abutment, they are able to support crowns, bridges, or full sets of dentures.

Excellent Stability

Since the implants fuse with the jawbone, they offer greater stability, comparable to natural tooth roots. No creams or adhesives are required to keep implant restorations in place as you eat and speak.

Natural-Looking Results For a Fully Functional Smile

Dental implants are an ideal way to replace your teeth that can last for decades.

Candidacy for Dental Implants

Missing or Broken Teeth

People who are missing teeth or have severely decayed or fractured teeth are ideal candidates for dental implants. A broken tooth will need to be extracted before an implant can be placed.

Healthy Enough for Oral Surgery

Patients must be in good enough health to undergo oral surgery. They should not suffer from any medical conditions that put wellness at stake or that increase the risk of complications.

Sufficient Bone and Gum Structure

Healthy bone and gums are needed to support the implant. Since tooth loss leads to bone loss and gum recession, lack of tissue density could pose problems for some potential patients.

Types of Dental Implants We Use at Our Practice

Dental implants are extremely versatile, making multiple kinds of treatment possible for patients at our Aurora dental office. We have several different implant options available to fill tooth gaps or completely restore a smile, including:
Dental implants

Traditional Implants

Traditional dental implants consist of a post made of titanium or other biocompatible materials. The implant post is anchored into the jawbone. We use high-end BioHorizons and Astra implants at Pioneer Hills Dental because of their high success rates.

Mini dental implants

Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants are similar to traditional implants. Because they are smaller in diameter, they require less jawbone structure to be anchored in place and can thus be inserted without a bone graft. The final results of getting mini dental implants are comparable to those of traditional implants.

All-on-4 implants

All-on-4

The All-on-4® system is a way to get a set of full dentures supported by just four dental implants. The best part is that the implants are placed in a single visit. Thanks to careful placement and planning, these same-day implants yield great results.

Tooth Loss Among Older Patients Is More Common Than You May Think

Given the rates of tooth loss, it's no surprise that many of our patients who get implant-supported crowns, bridges, and dentures are age 50 and older.

No-Judgment Treatment Is A Hallmark of Our Practice

Having missing teeth can make you feel helpless or anxious. However, it may help to know that we're not here to judge or make you feel bad about your smile.

Our dentist, Dr. Wolbaum, wants to help you feel happy and healthy again. He will kindly and transparently tell you all your options — as well as how and why they work.

He'll also educate you on topics like implant maintenance and restoration materials. That way, you'll feel fully empowered to enjoy your stunning new smile.

You Can Trust Dr. Wolbaum Every Step of the Way

Many dentists have to refer patients out for implant placement, because they don't have the training to place implants themselves. Dr. Wolbaum, however, is a fully qualified Misch Fellowship dentist. This means you can trust our Aurora office for your whole treatment, from start to finish.

Find a Natural New Smile With Our Aurora Dentist

After months or years missing your smile, you've now got a roadmap.

Whether you need to replace one tooth, several, or all of them, implants can handle the job. Our dentist uses them to support options like crowns, bridges, and dentures.

Though they're a big part of your treatment, they're also extremely discreet. With your natural-looking dentures or crown attached, it's likely no one will even be able to tell that you've had dental work done.

If you're ready to see which course of treatment is best for you, contact our caring Aurora team. You can also call our office at:

Bone and Gum Grafting Before Placing Implants

Missing teeth can cause the loss of bone and gum density. If patients are still interested in implants, grafting surgery can be performed to build up the jaw and gumline.

Bone Grafting

Illustration of bone graft

Bone grafts restore density to the jawbone through the use of harvested bone, donor bone, or synthetic material. After healing, the patient will be ready for dental implants.

Gum Graft

Illustration of gum graft

A gum graft rebuilds the gumline along the gap left by a missing tooth or multiple teeth. Soft tissue harvested from the palate or donor allografts can be used.

A Treatment Timeline for Placing Dental Implants

From start to finish, the process of placing and restoring dental implants typically takes several months to complete. When you visit our Aurora practice, we will provide a detailed breakdown of the process.

Thanks to implants, Dr. Terrance Wolbaum is able to rejuvenate the appearance and strength of a person's smile.

Initial Consultation

During the consultation, we will discuss your tooth replacement goals and examine any remaining natural teeth. This is a chance to get answers to any questions you may have.
Number 1

Anesthetic and Sedation

Prior to oral surgery, local anesthesia is administered to eliminate pain. Sedation techniques can also be used to put patients into a calm and fully relaxed state.
Number 2

Placing the Implants

Incisions are made along the gumline to expose the jawbone. The titanium implant is then inserted, using the socket where the original tooth was rooted when possible.
Number 3

Initial Healing Period

Healing from surgery lasts about 12 weeks. During this time, the titanium fuses with the surrounding jawbone. The process continues when osseointegration is complete.
Number 4

Placing the Abutment

The abutment is the part of the implant that secures and supports the finished restoration. The abutment is placed during a second oral surgery procedure.
Number 5

Second Healing Period

Healing after the abutment is placed takes much less time than the first recovery period. For most patients, the gums heal from this second surgery in just four to six weeks.
Number 6

Attaching the Restoration

Once the abutment is in place and the patient is healed, the dental implant is ready for the last step. The final custom crown, bridge, or denture is anchored in place.

I'm terrified of the dentist, as many people are. It took me a long time to schedule this appointment with the prodding of my husband, and I chose Pioneer Hills because a co-worker referred me. They were warm, welcome, and friendly from the get go and they set up a clear treatment plan. They also contacted my insurance to find out what was covered and how much I would expect to pay out of pocket. They were calm and comforting through the entire process, and I can honestly say that most of my fears of following through with my treatment plan are alleviated. I'm glad I chose them.
